Herzliah students discover the link between
reggae music and Jewish history
Secondary II students in
Herzliah Beutel’s Jewish History class, taught by Mrs. Caroline Frank,
learned about Jewish history through innovative approach- reggae music la
international singing star Matisyahu.
Using the superstar’s video and song ‘Jerusalem,’ students interpreted his
lyrics as they could apply to the industrial revolution, the enlightenment and
other historic periods that impacted Jewish life. This project embraces the
spirit of the new Reform which encourages strengthening of core competencies
through a variety of learning styles.
Students loved the approach as it had them thinking out of
the box as to the larger picture of the lesson and its historical significance.
“At Herzliah, we believe in making learning come alive. My students now
have a stronger and more in depth understanding of the history of Jerusalem from really
listening to Matisyahu and analyzing his music video. Programs that offer this
kind of innovative approach are very successful and the intended lesson, in
this case, the history of Jerusalem,
will remain with my students for a very long time,” affirmed Mrs. Frank.
